SAMUI is a found art sculpture based on Asian elephants.
This piece began with an old saddle whose shape immediately reminded me of an elephant’s forehead. From that single object, the sculpture took shape as an Asian elephant, distinguished by its smaller ears and inspired in part by the time I spent living on Koh Samui, Thailand, where elephants were a familiar presence.
The trunk is fabricated from structural and scrap steel. Turn-of-the-century barrel cart handles became the tusks, antique tractor seats and 55-gallon drum lids form the ears, and wagon wheels with 1940 Studebaker reflectors create the eyes.
Standing over 5 feet tall and approximately 4 feet wide, with a 4½-foot trunk, the piece weighs more than 50 pounds.
Currently displayed in Round Top, Texas, and available for $4,500.
